Parental Involvement
All young people should be encouraged to discuss their
substance use with their parents and carers.
Those who refuse may with help be encouraged and
supported to at a later date. Research has shown that
better outcomes are achieved with young people when
parents and carers are involved.
Parents and carers have a very important role in
supporting the young person. Parents and carers may
require basic substance information, information on
different interventions and how best they can support
their child.
The Brief Intervention Tool can be used with parents and
carers this can be useful if parents are concerned but
the young person will not access services.
Services can
provide advice and information about drugs and alcohol
to young people without the consent of a parent.
